Westchester Man, 25, Charged With Stealing Employer's Data, Costing $183K

A 25-year-old Westchester County web developer is facing multiple felony charges for allegedly stealing digital data from his former New Rochelle employer to create his own company, costing his former employer nearly $200,000.

Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino, Jr. announced on Friday that New Rochelle resident Nial Yusupov has been arraigned on one count of grand larceny, computer tampering and unlawful duplication of computer related material - all felonies - for an alleged scheme he worked up while employed by a New Rochelle-based chemical distribution company.

According to Scarpino, the felony complaint alleges that while employed as a web developer for the company, Yusupov had full access to the company’s computer servers with domain administrator privileges from May 30, 2016 until his voluntary resignation on April 28, 2017.

Scarpino said that between Jan. 1 and April 28 last year, Yusupov “used his administrator privileges to copy records relating to the operation of the business from a proprietary database, and used that data to create his own company called Solventsol.”

According to the felony complaint, an audit conducted by the company after they discovered Yusupov’s alleged thefts valued the repair of the system, their database and related data at an estimated $183,400.

The felony complaint further alleges that Yusupov used the company computer system to:

Set up and register “solventsol.com” in January 2017;
Set up an off-site network/server to host “solventsol.com” at 125 Van Guilder Avenue in New Rochelle;
Manipulate the company’s firewall settings to establish an open connection between the company databases and Solventsol's databases;
Write code in JavaScript to search and copy specific valuable information from the company’s database and then input that information into Solventsol's databases; and
Delete traces of the code and software Yusupov used to do this. These actions damaged the integrity of the company computer system.

Yusupov was arraigned in New Rochelle City Court this week and bail was set at $5,000. The court also ordered Yusupov to surrender his passport. He is due back in court next month to answer the charges.
